Grantham Heights Uniting Church is part of the Uniting Church in Australia (U.C.A). The U.C.A is a major Australian Protestant denomination.

We believe that behind this universe in which we live there is a God who "sparked" it into being. We don't pretend to understand the processes through which this occurred but we believe that this God created all things and all people.

We further believe that there is a uniqueness about human beings, a "reflection of God" in each human being, a sacredness about each human life. We believe therefore that human beings are worth more than animals and plants. This is a belief that is woven into the fabric of all human societies. All cultures view the death of a human being as a far more serious matter than the death of an animal.

As valuable and as sacred as human beings are it is our belief that there is a taint upon human nature. We seem to have a great capacity to sabotage our own lives and to make wrong choices. The word that the church has traditionally used for this is the word "sin." This word means to miss the mark. We live our lives "off target." If left to our own worst devices we create a world of misery for ourselves and others.

Central to our faith is a belief that God is on our side in the task of turning things around. God is passionate about making a world that reflects the "goodness" of his nature. God wants to connect with each human being in relationship and loving partnership. The problem for God is "how can he communicate to us that he really does care for us?" How can the creator of the universe communicate with his human creatures. If God were to do that effectively he'd have to become one of us. The Christian faith asserts this very notion. That God became flesh in the form of Jesus. Jesus was God gift wrapped in human skin. In Jesus, we see God "face to face."

In the death of Jesus God communicates a sacrificial love for humanity. In the crucifixion God took the weight of our "screwed up lives" upon himself that we might be offered a new beginning. God gives us the gift of a fresh start. All we need do is to accept it and say thankyou. In the resurrection we have the ultimate proof that the self-sacrifice of Jesus was more powerful than death itself.

God invites us into a life of partnership through Jesus Christ. Jesus invites us to give up our futile efforts at saving ourselves and trust in him and follow. The words of Jesus "follow me" are still as relevant today as when he called his first disciples. If we choose to say yes to this call it doesn't mean that we suddenly have an easy time of life. To be a disciple of Jesus can be tough. This is particularly so in a society where no one wants to know him. The promise though is that once we accept the call, the spirit of Jesus himself enters into our lives and starts to transform us. Millions of people around the world can testify to this life changing power.

Our world longs for peace. Politicians and military strategists spend millions trying to sort out how to manufacture peace but real peace begins in the human heart. There can be no peace simply by manipulating people and governments. Real peace will only come through the transforming of the inner worlds of people, for it is from the inner worlds of people that evil springs.
